19th amendment post

Today, August 18th, 2020  we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution:  Women’s Right to Vote.  The Amendment, which was passed by Congress on June 4, 1919 and ratified August 18, 1920 provided that “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”

The passage of this Amendment was not brought about by a singular event, individual or group.  Instead, it was women and their allies, working together for decades, who fought and won the constitutional right to vote.  Today, more than 68 million women vote in elections because of these courageous suffragists who never gave up the fight for equality.

As we approach the 2020 elections, regardless of which side of the aisle you stand on, it is important that we all exercise our important right – to vote.
